Academic, Research, and Commercial Applications
Captiv8 Aquaculture partners with professional aquaculturists and researchers to satisfy system requirements and achieve study goals, offering standard bulk sizes, as well as filling custom sizes, of most raw materials and compound formulations maintained in stock. Pricing is dynamic and reflects real time costs of materials and transportation.
Customized formulations are a common request; if a project requires a specific ionic strength that is not listed on our site, then it's generally no trouble to formulate and produce. We guarantee ionic accuracy and repeatability greater than 99.5% on all formulations.
Similarly, we are commonly requested to produce customized formulations for achieving specific pH values.

Formulations are available to establish target pH and alkalinity values, as well as to assist in pH stability within a narrow range of values. We offer individual buffer formulations which produce pH values in the range of 4.6 - 10.0, in increments of 0.20. Buffers can be combined in order to achieve specific pH values.
The three most commonly sought after formulations are employed in alkaline recirculating systems. They are:

Feeds and feeding attractants are formulated for the following broad groups of consumers:
-
marine, brackish, and freshwater finfish
-
suspension-feeding invertebrates, including:
-
ascidians;
-
bivalves;
-
cnidarians;
-
crustaceans;
-
holothurians;
-
poriferans;
-
sedentarians.
-
Formulations are expressly modeled after nutrient requirements, and incorporate components which improve: growth rate; color intensity; robustness; feeding response; and/or feed conversion. 100% of the components utilized in each formulation are substances consumable by cohort members, and which have a known, calculated, direct benefit to the consumers. They are dry blends, not liquid suspensions, and feature very low phosphorus content per unit mass.
Our formulations are completely free of:
-
pH stabilizers (e.g. acids, incorporated to mitigate microbial growth);
-
fillers;
-
bacteriostatic or bactericidal substances (e.g. preservatives);
-
terrestrially-grown or -sourced components, including garlic derivatives and yeast;
-
isolated hormones;
-
food colors, artificial or otherwise;
-
Artemia cysts;
-
water.
A range of nominal sizes is produced, accommodating various size classes and life stages of aquatic organisms.
We offer feed formulations which are individually or collectively employed in any recirculating system used to raise a cohort consisting of any of the aforementioned groups of organisms, regardless of life stage.
Feeding attractants are naturally present in our feed formulations, however we offer a range of effective, isolated attractant formulations for clientele preferring to employ a third-party feed.
Nutrient Management encompasses both addition and reduction of nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, and organic compounds, dissolved and particulate, from living systems, the goal being equilibrium between demand, availability to livestock and/or crops, and system uptake potential, for maximum yield and robustness of your final product.
We presently offer three formulations for microbial nutrient management, two of which (Remedi8 and Inocul8) effectively establish the appropriate microbial consortium and are then employed to maintain superior extended nutrient management performance. These dry formulations are shipped dry, and have a recommended application rate of 2 g per 200 gals. over the initial 14 days spent establishing the microbial consortium, maintaining with 1 g per 500 - 750 gals. weekly, or 1 g per 3,000 - 5,000 gals. daily, or as required to maintain desired nutrient content in system. The third formulation, Elimin8 DIN, is a homogenous suspension of heterotrophic microorganisms which aggressively reduce ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate content in recirculating systems.
In systems utilizing phototrophs as the primary nutrient sink, we offer a concentrated molybdenum solution to dramatically enhance the rate of phototrophic nitrogen uptake where Mo availability is a rate-limiting factor.
In situations wherein the nutrient budget of a system is skewed towards consumption and there is a resulting paucity of dissolved inorganic nutrients which is limiting productivity, we offer formulations to provide appropriate forms of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in controlled fashion.
Recirculating systems which incorporate algal turf scrubbers as a means of nutrient management often experience diminished productivity due to the absence of specific minor and trace elements required for photosynthesis. To counter this, and enhance rates of nutrient uptake in these systems, we offer a customized formulation which provides specific elements in appropriate ratios, and which excludes inhibitory elements such as those found in the Lanthanide family.
Raw (Source) Water Treatment encompasses compounds formulated to render source water safe for use in living systems, through neutralization of harmful compounds and impurities. While point of use purification systems are recommended for preparation of source water destined for any living system (particularly when an analysis of said water indicates the presence of undesirable and/or harmful substances), they are not within the budget of every operation. Additionally, service interruptions require that a backup means of preparing source water during emergencies be readily available. We offer cost-effective, pragmatic solutions to address the aforementioned circumstances.
